In comparison\u00a0to last year, there are no significant changes. Interestingly, however, most impact factors have slightly decreased. Furthermore,\u00a0the impact factor of the only open-access journal in robotics\u00a0considered in JCR, the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ars-journal.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #4f8abe;\">International Journal of Advanced Robotic Systems<\/span><\/a>,\u00a0has dropped to 0.497 from\u00a00.821, despite its high level of self cites (43%). This year again, Meccanica and the Journal of Mechanisms and Robotics\u00a0rely on\u00a0very high rates of\u00a0self citation (43% and 38%, respectively). This basically means\u00a0that their impact factors\u00a0are\u00a0probably artificially inflated by at least 20%.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Here is the list of journals\u00a0that publish papers in the field of mechanisms and robotics with their 2013 (and 2012) impact factors, as well as the percentage of self-citations:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/ijr.sagepub.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #4f8abe;\">International Journal of Robotics Research<\/span><\/a>: 2.503\u00a0(2.863), 15%\u00a0due to self-cites<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/ieeexplore.ieee.org\/xpl\/RecentIssue.jsp?punumber=8860\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #4f8abe;\">IEEE Transactions on Robotics<\/span><\/a>: 2.649 (2.571), 7% due to self-cites<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www3.interscience.wiley.com\/cgi-bin\/jhome\/35876\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #4f8abe;\">Journal of Field Robotics<\/span><\/a>: 1.880 (2.152), 15% due to self-cites<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.springerlink.com\/content\/100243\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #4f8abe;\">Autonomous Robots<\/span><\/a>: 1.750 (1.908), 6% due\u00a0self-cites<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www3.interscience.wiley.com\/journal\/112094293\/home\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #4f8abe;\">International Journal of Medical Robotics and Computer Assisted Surgery<\/span><\/a>: 1.532 (1.488), 14% due to\u00a0self-cites<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.springerlink.com\/content\/102958\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #4f8abe;\">Meccanica<\/span><\/a>: 1.815 (1.747), <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">43%<\/span> due to self-cites<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/journal\/01416359\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #4f8abe;\">Precision Engineering<\/span><\/a>: 1.403 (1.393), 10% due to self-cites<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/asmedl.aip.org\/MechanicalDesign\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #4f8abe;\">Journal of Mechanical Design<\/span><\/a>: 1.165 (1.247), 21% due to self-cites<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/journal\/07365845\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #4f8abe;\">Robotics and Computer-Integrated Manufacturing<\/span><\/a>: 1.839 (1.230), 13% due to self-cites<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/journal\/0094114X\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #4f8abe;\">Mechanism and Machine Theory<\/span><\/a>: 1.310 (1.214), 22% due to self-cites<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/journal\/09218890\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #4f8abe;\">Robotics and Autonomous Systems<\/span><\/a>:\u00a01.105 (1.156), 13% due to self-cites<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/asmedl.aip.org\/JMR\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #4f8abe;\">Journal of Mechanisms and Robotics<\/span><\/a>: 0.863 (0.967), <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">38%<\/span> due to self-cites<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/journals.cambridge.org\/action\/displayJournal?jid=ROB\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #4f8abe;\">Robotica<\/span><\/a>: 0.894 (0.880), 17% due to self-cites<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.springerlink.com\/content\/100290\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #4f8abe;\">Journal of Intelligent &amp; Robotic Systems<\/span><\/a>: 0.810 (0.827), 24% due to self-cites<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ars-journal.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #4f8abe;\">International Journal of Advanced Robotic Systems<\/span><\/a>: 0.497 (0.821), <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">43%<\/span> due to self-cites<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.emeraldinsight.com\/Insight\/viewContainer.do?containerType=Journal&amp;containerId=10674\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #4f8abe;\">Industrial Robot<\/span><\/a>: 0.622 (0.690), 18% due to self-cites<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rsj.or.jp\/AR\/index_e.html\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #4f8abe;\">Advanced Robotics<\/span><\/a>: 0.562 (0.510), 11% due to self-cites<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Lastly, I am very proud that\u00a0the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.tcsme.org\" target=\"_blank\">Transactions of the Canadian Society for Mechanical Engineering<\/a> (TCSME), for which I act as the managing editor, continues to enjoy increased attention. Its\u00a02013 impact factor is 0.460, and only 3% of all citations taken into account in calculating it come from papers published in TCSME. Next time you wonder where to publish your robotics paper, why not\u00a0consider TCSME? We are non-for-profit and run mostly on voluntary basis.
